Adam Thole, a Electrical & Computer Engineering student, has modified an Xbox 360 controller to make one of the analog sticks controlled by the tilting motion of the controller. Instead of moving the left analog stick, this mod allows you to tilt the controller forward, backward, left or right.

The mod uses a two-axis accelerometer that measures the left/right and up/down tilt, which is determined by measuring the force of gravity on the axis. The only part of the left analog stick that works after the modification is the button.

Thole has documented in great detail the creation of this Xbox 360 tilt controller mod and he has also published a video showing the device in action. In the movie below, Thole plays Full Auto and Crimson Skies with his mod. You can buy this mod (which uses the wired Xbox 360 controller) on eBay for only $50.
